SO, WHAT IS A MUSIC VIDEO?
-What is a Music Video(MV)?

A music video is a video of variable duration, that integrates a music song or a music album with imagery that is produced for promotional or musical artistic purposes. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a music marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings.

-What is the purpose of a Music Video?

to provide a visual interpretation of the sequence of the tracks. These videos all offer an interpretation of the music that they accompany, that lends itself to a much more compelling listening experience. There are some producers or companies who also create and release songs to make money and gain profit. This can bring them a lot of financial and nominal benefits.

-What is the structure of a MV?

It is essentially a short film based on the song. Narrative music videos typically include a structure of a beginning, middle, and end. There are also usually no lip-syncing or musical performances in the video. The band creates a narrative around the lyrics relating to the song's themes. There are also some music videos that contain elements of dance, such as Korean k-pop music, k-pop is generally based on the meaning of the lyrics to set the scene and dance will also be mixed with some story line. -Who is involved in the making of an MV(what are the roles?)
  • Director – The main responsibility of production lies with her/him. A music video director is involved at every stage of the production process, helping and guiding others to do their job.

  • Screen Writer – They are responsible for coming up with a concept that fits the budget of production. They will then write down all that is going to happen in the video into a script.

  • Storyboard Artist – They sketch key frames of the video from the provided script onto a sheet of paper, so that others in the production team have a better understanding of the flow of the story.

  • Casting (Director) – In small productions casting is done by the Director himself, whereas in bigger productions, there are specially appointed Casting Directors to cast the talent that will be used in the video.

  • Art Director – Looks after and finalises the visual side of the video.

  • Set Director – Looks after and finalises the build of set and placements of objects in line with the script.

  • Conceptual Artist – When there is an out of ordinary element in a video, it's look and feel is thought out by the Conceptual Artist. Should those aliens be green or pink? Will they have three eyes or four hands?

  • Director of Photography – Makes the entire video look cool and authentic to the script.

  • Camera Operator – Actually shoots the video.

  • Camera Assistants – Assist the Camera Operator.

  • Producer – Purchases everything needed for the shoot, carefully picking the right brands.

-What are the different forms (types) of MVs that artists make?
1. Performance music videos

This music video is probably the oldest and most commonly used music video. In performance music videos, you'll typically see the band, well, performing - meaning it's a recording of them playing on their instruments. Performance music videos are more uncomplicated to film than other music video kinds, and it's great for when a band wants to create a video with a low budget.

2. Narrative music videos

A narrative-based music video is a music video where the artist(s) are trying to tell some sort of story.

It is essentially a short film based on the song. Narrative music videos typically include a structure of a beginning, middle, and end. If the director uses illustration, they create a music video where the narrative is based purely on the song. The video will usually include a direct reference to the lyrics. The scenes are a more or less direct representation of the meaning of the lyrics. The director will utilize their creative genes when creating the music video with amplification. Here the lyrics are still closely connected to the music video. It can have complementary scenes, not necessarily in the verses, but related to the theme and amplifying the meaning of the song. Finally, disjunction is when the narrative becomes detached from the meaning of the song. Here, the director chooses to create a new meaning or theme through the video. This is essentially a narrative video that may not make much sense on first viewing.

3.Concept music videos

Concept music videos are videos that have no storyline and usually have no relationship to the lyrics themselves. A concept music video is usually based on the artist's vision. It can be seen as a way to expand their creative vision with songs. Concept music videos usually include a performance or narrative, so the viewer is not completely lost. However, while there may be a smaller narrative in the video, there is usually no structure to the video. Viewers can become fascinated by trying to understand the video, or simply because the video is so quirky they can't forget it.

4. Lyrics music videos

The lyric music video is exactly what it sounds like. As the song progresses, a music video with the lyrics appears on the screen. Lyric videos started out as windows movie maker videos with a blue background and lyrics listed on the screen. But slowly the industry adopted it and started making official lyric videos with matching fonts and colors. They have shifted from modern karaoke type videos to more creative and innovative ones. Lyric music videos often include fonts that match the theme or genre of the song as well as background colors and font colors that match it. In some cases, the lyrics can be animated to give more meaning to the music. On top of that, there is usually a lot of action in a lyric video, so it is more than just static text displayed on the screen.

5. Animated music videos

Animated music videos mean everything from simple 2D animation to stop-motion or CGI. Animated music videos usually follow the same structure as other music video genres.
