Critical Creative Reflection
Conventions are usually the typical things that audience expect to see in the media product. Before we shot, we searched a lot of genres about horror movies and did some research on them. Our films are based on the reasons that family members during childhood have a spiritual impact on children. Our genre is psychological horror. Our generic conventions take each actor into account. Different times are reflected through different outfits, and high key lighting and low key lighting create a different feel for the character. The locations and scenes used in the film fit the feel of remembering the old neighbourhood. We showed our characters dressed differently and reminiscing about encounters they received as children, some of which they did experience as children. In our film we used a slow, moody soundtrack to enhance the audience's emotions, as most films in my genre have a moody soundtrack in the background. The background of our short film is very simple, like most thrillar movies where the protagonist's childhood is encountered with an inhuman existence. We are not targeting a specific audience because such experiences are not common to everyone or in the family, and many people are becoming aware of the problem, so my target audience is everyone. In our story, the protagonist returns to the house where he lived as a child, remembers his father who used to abuse him because of his alcoholism, develops mental problems, and, by accident, kills his own father. This kind of violence against children because of a family member's bad habits is not uncommon and causes mental problems. Our products represent the issues of family relationships and adolescent mental health that society is now facing. By following guidelines and conventions, I can allow my audience to connect with my content and understand the situation of the characters. We used simple camera and editing techniques commonly used in film, such as medium shots, long takes, fades, dissolves etc. Due to the limited conditions, we used equipment such as tripods, video cameras and editing software such as cut screen, imovie, which are used in most short films. In our short film you can see the twist, which is that it is the son who kills his father with drugs, and later we show another twist where the teenager has mental problems. I used special effects in the production company and in the company name. The font of the title is also in bold.
The film opening can engage with audiences by creating a compelling visual and auditory experience that captures their attention and draws them into the story. This can be done through the use of dynamic camera angles, music, sound effects, and visual effects that create a sense of tension, excitement, or intrigue. Additionally, incorporating relatable characters and themes can help to establish an emotional connection with the audience. As for distribution, your film opening can be distributed through various channels such as cinemas, streaming platforms, and social media, depending on your target audience and marketing strategy. It's important to consider factors such as accessibility, reach, and engagement when deciding on the best distribution channels for your film opening. Media producers use various methods to identify their target audience. These methods include audience profiling, quantitative research through TV viewing figures, qualitative research through questionnaires, demographics charts, and psychographic graphs. Audience profiling involves creating a profile of the target audience based on their interests, behaviors, and preferences. Quantitative research involves collecting statistics and hard facts about the audience, such as TV viewing figures. Qualitative research focuses on the opinions and feelings of the target audience and can be done through methods such as interviews and focus groups. Demographic charts provide information on the age, gender, income, and education level of the target audience. Psychographic graphs provide more detailed information about the audience's personality, values, attitudes, and lifestyle. Ultimately, media producers use these methods to understand their audience and create content that resonates with them.
On a scale of ten I would give my skills rate a 7. Although we tried to use as many different shooting techniques as possible, we still needed a lot of experience to do better. Because of our limited conditions and time, we had to use a tripod to help us with some shots and learn how to mount the camera on a tripod. When editing, the editing software was very user-friendly for newcomers and it was easy to split up the different clips in a clear and concise way. As we shot over several days, some of the details may not have been taken care of during the retelling.
We have integrated these technologies using post-production using software such as Photoshop and cut-screen, as well as using hardware such as digital cameras and editing equipment to shoot and edit films. Online technologies like YouTube, tiktok can be used for distribution, marketing and collaboration purposes. The integration of these technologies can help media producers create high quality films, streamline the production process and distribute their films to a wider audience. It is important to categorise technologies by stage and show how they work in tandem with each other to create a seamless workflow. Using flowcharts and mind maps can help visualise the integration of different technologies.
