Old town road is our final choice, "Old Town Road" is the debut mainstream single by American rapper Lil Nas X, first released independently in December 2018. After gaining popularity, the single was re-released by Columbia Records in March 2019. Lil Nas X also recorded a remix with American country singer Billy Ray Cyrus. The song has been widely labeled as “Country rap”, a genre that had not often reached the mainstream prior to its release.
The song initially gained popularity on the social video sharing app TikTok and eventually entered the Billboard charts in March 2019.[3] The song reached number 19 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart before the magazine disqualified it from the chart on the grounds that it did not fit the genre, sparking a debate on the definition of country music. Though it was not re-entered onto the overall country charts, both versions of the song collectively peaked at number one on the general Billboard Hot 100, for a record-breaking nineteen consecutive weeks and the remix peaked at #50 on Billboard's Country Airplay chart.
The song was certified diamond by the RIAA in October 2019 for selling ten million total units in the United States, the fastest song to be certified diamond. At the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. In October 2019, Nas X's label Columbia Records/Sony Music Entertainment, won the Music & Sound Recordings Award from SAG-AFTRA "for work that exemplifies equal access" of LGBTQ and "other misrepresented or underrepresented groups." In September 2021, the song set the record as the second highest certified song ever by the RIAA with 16-times platinum status in the United States, meaning it accumulated 16 million equivalent song units. It has sold over 18 million records worldwide, making it one of the best-selling singles of all time. Rolling Stone named it the 490th greatest song of all time in its 2021 list.

It was the song on everybody’s lips in summer 2019 and as such there’s been a lot of discussion about what the "Old Town Road" lyrics mean - which is something Lil Nas X has had a bit of fun with. In June 2019 he trolled Twitter with a tweet joking that "Old Town Road" was about climate change. Later – after he came out during Pride Month and fans speculated the song must have some hidden homoerotic meaning – Lil Nas X shut them down by tweeting “old town road is literally about horses.”
Detailed Lyric Analysis
[Intro: Billy Ray Cyrus]
Oh, oh-oh
Oh
[Chorus: Billy Ray Cyrus]
Yeah, I'm gonna take my horse to the old town road
I'm gonna ride 'til I can't no more
I'm gonna take my horse to the old town road
I'm gonna ride 'til I can't no more
(Kio, Kio)
[Verse 1: Lil Nas X]
I got the horses in the back
Horse tack is attached
Hat is matte black
Got the boots that's black to match
Ridin' on a horse, ha
You can whip your Porsche
I been in the valley
You ain't been up off that porch, now
[Refrain: Lil Nas X]
Can't nobody tell me nothin'
You can't tell me nothin'
Can't nobody tell me nothin'
You can't tell me nothin'
[Verse 2: Lil Nas X]
Ridin' on a tractor
Lean all in my bladder
Cheated on my baby
You can go and ask her
My life is a movie
Bull ridin' and boobies
Cowboy hat from Gucci
Wrangler on my booty
[Refrain: Lil Nas X]
Can't nobody tell me nothin'
You can't tell me nothin'
Can't nobody tell me nothin'
You can't tell me nothin'
[Chorus: Lil Nas X]
Yeah, I'm gonna take my horse to the old town road
I'm gonna ride 'til I can't no more
I'm gonna take my horse to the old town road
I'm gonna ride 'til I can't no more
[Verse 3: Billy Ray Cyrus]
Hat down, cross town, livin' like a rockstar
Spent a lot of money on my brand new guitar
Baby's got a habit: diamond rings and Fendi sports bras
Ridin' down Rodeo in my Maserati sports car
Got no stress, I've been through all that
I'm like a Marlboro Man so I kick on back
Wish I could roll on back to that old town road
I wanna ride 'til I can't no more
[Chorus: Lil Nas X & Billy Ray Cyrus]
Yeah, I'm gonna take my horse to the old town road
I'm gonna ride 'til I can't no more
I'm gonna take my horse to the old town road
I'm gonna ride 'til I can't no more
"Old Town Road" is about much more than riding horses though. In an interview with song lyrics site Genius, Lil Nas X explained the titular road represents the path to success and the horse he’s riding represents that while he may not have had much at that point in his life, he did have the talent and determination to make it.
Type of music and target audience
We wanted to make a narrative music video about traveling back in time to catch a thief in the cowboy era, which contains country rap, country trap pop and Southern hip hop. Based on the results of previous years, we can also see that the song is mainly popular on media platforms, such as tiktok, so it s target audience is teenagers and some groups interested in pop music, who also pay more attention to the quality of the music.
Features that we focus on
We focus to in each section. Especially editing, we will transition through editing. Also focus on mise en scene, especially the characters' clothes and scenes.
Others about our Music Video
We will represent our position in relation to the role by some symolic codes. We will use a small camera to record and represent the part that is recalled and separate from the positive area, and we will also use a tripod to help us shoot a stable shot.
We'll be challenging editing to the beat and linking to the lyric, and we'll have a lot of new stuff to add to the video.
The idea came to us after watching the Watermelon Sugar by Harry Style and Blueberry faygo from Lil Mosey videos, shot at the beach or in a pool.
We've done some tweaks based on the original music video, I think the melody of the song is like a cowboy feel, so we'll add some horse riding shots to the music video so we can link to the song. And it will also have a better visual effect.

We will focus on mise en scene because this mv needs to show that we are in a different era through special clothing, and the cowboy hat is a symbolic code for the cowboy era. The horse riding is a very obvious way to express the meaning of lyrics.
4. What MVs / found images are you basing your ideas on (include links)
The original mv for this song inspired our thoughts on the current mv. The story still takes place in the cowboy era, but the story line in it has changed a bit. Below is a photo I found of the original video.

We can see that the horses also play a very important role in this mv, which does not match the modern streets at all. And their gorgeous cowboy outfits. Here is the link for mv that inspired us.

5. What MV conventions will you be using / challenging?
We had many challenges to face, such as how to explain our travel to the cowboy era, which needed to be shown through editing and mise en scene. We also needed the audience to be able to understand our story. Vicky and I had never been on a horse before, so we needed to learn how to ride a horse before we could achieve the effect the film needed to have.
